The Words African Farmers
Actually Use
Hurudza. Goho. Shamba. Mushonga. A twenty-litre bucket. A matchbox of top dressing. Farming has a working vocabulary that agricultural textbooks never print — so here it is, explained properly, with the conversions that turn it into numbers you can plan with.

Shona, Swahili, Ndebele & Yoruba
Not a phrasebook. Each word carries a piece of agronomy with it — and several carry a warning.
Hurudza
Shonamaster farmer
A farmer of real standing — the one whose granary is still full when the rest of the village has started buying. Not simply a big landholder: hurudza is earned by consistent harvests, and it is the closest thing traditional Shona farming has to a professional title.
What makes a hurudza is almost never a secret. It is timing — land prepared before the rains, planted in the first good downpour, weeded before the weeds set seed, and harvested dry. Every one of those is a date, and dates are exactly what a season plan protects.
Murimi

varimi (plural) · kurima, to farm or to plough
The everyday word for a farmer. Kurima, the verb it comes from, means to till or to plough — so in Shona a farmer is literally 'one who tills'.
Goho
Shonaharvest, yield
The harvest itself, and by extension the size of it. 'Goho rakanaka' — a good harvest — is what the whole season is judged on, and the only agricultural statistic most households have ever kept.
Goho is measured in bags and buckets long before anyone mentions tonnes per hectare. Both are useful: bags tell you what the household has to eat and sell, yield per hectare tells you whether the land was worked well. Converting between them is what the measurement tables below are for.
Munda
Shonafield
minda (plural)
The cultivated field — distinct from the homestead (musha) and from grazing land. A household usually has several minda, often scattered, often on quite different soils.
That scattering is agronomically important and routinely ignored. Two fields 500 metres apart can differ in soil depth, texture and drainage enough to want different crops. Advice given to 'the farm' rather than to each munda averages away the thing that matters.
Mushonga
Shonamedicine — and, in modern usage, agrochemical
Traditionally a medicine or charm, prepared by a n'anga. In modern farming Shona the same word covers pesticides, herbicides and fungicides: to spray a crop is kudira mushonga, to put medicine on it.
This is a genuine safety problem hiding inside a word. 'Ndakaisa mushonga' — I applied medicine — says nothing about the active ingredient, the rate or the pre-harvest interval, and a farmer who cannot name what they sprayed cannot rotate chemical groups, avoid resistance, or observe a withholding period. Write the product name and the date down. This is also the word behind the name Divisi.
Mbeu
Shonaseed
Seed, whether retained from last season or bought certified. The distinction is not in the word, but it is very much in the yield.
Retained seed from an open-pollinated variety will largely breed true. Retained seed from an F1 hybrid will not — the second generation segregates and typically gives up a substantial share of the parent's yield. If you keep seed, know which of the two you are keeping.

hozi · matura (plural)
The raised grain store of a Shona homestead — traditionally built off the ground on stones or poles, with a thatched roof, so air moves under the grain and rodents struggle to reach it.
The design is doing real science. Grain that goes into store above roughly 13% moisture will heat, mould and attract weevils; raising the floor and keeping the roof sound is a moisture strategy. More harvest is lost after the harvest than most farmers realise.

jangano · ilima (Ndebele)
Neighbours gathered to work one household's field in a day — weeding, harvesting or threshing — repaid in food, beer and the understanding that they will be called to yours.
Nhimbe exists because some farm operations have a deadline that one household cannot meet alone. Weeding is the classic case: maize weeded late loses yield it can never recover, so twenty people for one day beats one person for twenty.
Zunde raMambo
Shonathe chief's field
A communal field worked by the community, with the harvest held by the chief as a reserve for widows, orphans, the elderly and anyone who falls short in a bad year.
It is a food-security institution — a granary-level insurance scheme that predates the phrase by centuries, and one of the clearest examples of African farming practice that development programmes keep reinventing under new names.

Maize — the staple that dominates Southern and Eastern African smallholder farming, and the crop most household food security is measured in.

Groundnuts, or peanuts — a legume, and in most smallholder rotations the crop that quietly pays for the maize.
Because it is a legume, groundnut fixes nitrogen and leaves the field better than it found it. Following maize with groundnut and then maize again is one of the cheapest yield interventions available to a farmer with no money for fertiliser.

The Swahili word for a farmer, used across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the wider East African region.
Shamba
Swahilifarm, field, cultivated plot
The plot itself. It has travelled into East African English wholesale — 'I'm going to the shamba' needs no translation in Nairobi.

Buckets & Bags
What a 20 Litre Bucket Really Weighs
The most argued-about number in African grain trading. Both sides are right — they are just not filling the bucket the same way.
A bucket measures volume; a scale measures weight. Twenty litres is 0.02 of a cubic metre, so the weight is simply the grain's bulk density divided by 50. Shelled maize sits near 721 kg per cubic metre — which is 14.4 kg struck level.
Heap that same bucket and you add about a quarter more, landing on the 18 kg everyone quotes. Neither figure is wrong. Agree on level or heaped before you agree on a price.

A standard grain bag is a weight, not a volume: 50 kg of maize fills a bag, but 50 kg of sunflower fills far more of one. Where you have the choice, sell by weight.
Measuring Land
How to Measure a Field by Walking It
Seed rate, fertiliser rate and expected yield are all quoted per hectare. If you don't know your hectares, none of them can help you.

Pace the length. Pace the width. Multiply the two in metres. Divide by 10,000 — that is your hectares.
Local Units
What They Call It Where You Sell
The unit a farmer is actually paid in changes at every border — and a price compared across the wrong unit is simply a wrong price.

Every figure above says where it came from, and none of them is a legal standard — a market unit is a local agreement, so yours may differ. Weigh one on a scale and you will have your own number for good. One unit we could not verify at all is Malawi's “meda”: we found no evidence it exists, and Malawian maize appears to trade in pails, tins, plates and basins instead. Fertiliser & Spray
The Matchbox, the Cap and the Knapsack
Household measures are fine for inputs — as long as you calibrate them once and know what they assume.

One rule underneath all of these: a household measure is a volume, and a label is written in weight or in concentration. The conversion between them depends on the product, so check it once per product and write the result on the container.

Precision farming, crop intelligence, farm digitisation — what these actually mean on one hectare, rather than in a brochure.
Precision farming
also precision agriculture
Managing a field according to what that field actually is, rather than by a district-wide recommendation. The commercial version involves GPS-guided machinery and variable-rate applicators. The smallholder version is the same idea without the hardware: know this plot's soil, slope and rainfall, and treat it differently from the plot across the road.
The precision that matters most on one hectare is not centimetre-level machinery. It is choosing a crop the soil can actually carry, planting in the right ten-day window, and putting fertiliser on at the growth stage that uses it.
Farm digitisation

Turning what a farm does into a record: what was planted where and when, what went on it, what it cost, what came off. Digitisation is the record; the value arrives when something can be computed from it.
A digitised farm can be financed. The reason smallholder credit is scarce is not that lenders dislike farmers — it is that there is nothing to underwrite. Three seasons of dated field records is an asset before it is a convenience.
Farm monitoring
Watching the state of a farm over time rather than inspecting it at a moment — task completion, crop stage, input use and observations recorded as they happen, so a change is visible when it starts instead of at harvest.
Season monitoring
Tracking how the current season is actually unfolding against how it normally does: when the rains started, how much has fallen, whether the dry spells are longer than usual, whether the crop is at the stage the calendar says it should be.
This is the discipline that replaces 'we plant in mid-November'. Onset of rains has become materially less predictable across much of Sub-Saharan Africa, and a planting date inherited from a grandparent is now a genuine risk rather than accumulated wisdom.
Crop intelligence
Information about a crop turned into a decision for a specific field — not 'maize needs nitrogen' but 'this field, this variety, at this stage, needs this much, and the rain to move it in is on Thursday'.
Yield estimation

Predicting how much a field will produce before it is harvested, from the crop, the variety, the plant population, the growth stage and the season's weather so far.
An estimate made before harvest is a planning instrument: it tells you what storage you need, what you can commit to a buyer, and whether the household will make it to the next harvest. An estimate is never a promise — a hailstorm three weeks out outranks any model.
Nutrient management
Deciding which nutrients a crop needs, how much, and when — matching supply from the soil, manure and fertiliser to what the crop removes, so nothing is wasted in either direction.
Timing frequently beats quantity. Nitrogen applied to maize at knee height and again before tasselling does more than the same total dumped at planting, because the crop takes up most of its nitrogen during rapid vegetative growth — and what is applied early on sandy soil is often gone before the plant wants it.
Weather forecast
vs nowcast vs seasonal outlook
Three different things a farmer needs and one word usually used for all of them. A nowcast covers the next few hours — will this storm reach my field. A forecast covers up to about ten days, and is what task timing depends on. A seasonal outlook covers months and speaks in probabilities of being wetter or drier than normal; it is a crop-choice instrument, not a planting-date one.
Confusing the third for the second is the expensive mistake. A seasonal outlook saying 'below-normal rainfall' should change which crop and which variety you plant. It cannot tell you whether to spray on Tuesday.

AgriApp, farming app, agritech app
A mobile application built for farming — the category Divisi belongs to. The useful ones share three traits: they work when the network does not, they answer for a specific field rather than a region, and they cost the farmer nothing.
Aura farming
internet slang — included because people ask
Nothing to do with agriculture. In 2025 internet slang, 'aura farming' means doing something with such unbothered style that you accumulate 'aura' — the way a footballer walks away from a goal without watching it go in. To 'farm' here means to grind for points, as in a video game.
Since you are here anyway: the actual farming equivalent is having a full granary in a drought year, and it is not achieved by looking unbothered. See hurudza above — the aura is a byproduct of having weeded on time.
