One hive gives you around 20-30 kg of honey a year - about a full debe - and it barely touches your land or water. The same bees are pollinating your beans, pumpkins and fruit trees while they're at it, for free.

Start with a Kenya Top-Bar Hive: cheap, no extractor needed, and you check it one comb at a time. You don't have to buy bees either - rub the inside with beeswax, set it near flowering trees and water, and a wild swarm usually moves in within a few weeks.

Keep it at least 100 m from the house and animals, with a hedge in front so the bees fly out above head height as they leave. And only harvest comb once at least three-quarters of the cells are capped with white wax - that's your sign it's dry enough to store for years.
