A government contract-farming scheme launched for the 2016/17 season that arranges private-sector-financed inputs on credit for commercial farmers, who commit to delivering part of their harvest to the Grain Marketing Board in repayment. It began with maize in summer and wheat in winter.

Under the scheme's 2019 bank-financed 'Smart Agriculture' mechanism, farmers passed two-stage screening: a district-level Agritex check on basic criteria such as access to productive land and no loan defaults, then a participating bank's own risk assessment. |
| What you get | Seed and fertiliser supplied on credit. The farmer contracts to produce a minimum of 5 tonnes per hectare of maize or wheat and repays the input credit through crop deliveries to the GMB, which deducts the cost of the inputs from the delivery payment. |
