Okra yellow vein mosaic is a virus disease of okra spread from plant to plant by the tiny white flying insect called the whitefly (its "vector" — the insect that carries the disease). Instead of green leaves fed by hidden green veins, the fine network of veins turns bright yellow until the whole leaf glows yellow, the plant stays small, and the pods come out pale, hard, twisted and unsellable. The virus lives on in okra, in wild mallow-family weeds and in leftover okra plants between crops. Once a plant is infected there is no cure — you can only protect the healthy plants.

Why it matters

This is the most damaging disease of okra: caught early, it can wipe out as much as 80% of your harvest, and infected plants make pods that are small, pale and twisted — nobody will buy them. The reason it is so feared is that there is no cure once a plant catches it: no spray can clean the virus out of a sick plant. All you can do is stop the whitefly that spreads it and pull out the sick plants before they infect the rest — so the whole fight is about prevention and speed, not treatment.

First vein-yellowing on young leaves or rising whitefly numbers; act early on the vector and rogue infected plants, as infection is systemic and incurable.
