Turmeric leaf blotch is a leaf fungus that peppers the leaves with many small dirty-yellow to reddish-brown blotches until the whole plant looks rusty and scorched. It thrives in cool, wet, cloudy weather and spreads by spores splashing and blowing from leaf to leaf. It does not rot the rhizomes directly, but by killing off the leaves — the green factory that fills the fingers underground — it can badly shrink the harvest. It is a disease of the leafy months, not of the seed or the soil.
Why it matters
Leaf blotch does not touch the rhizomes you dig, but it starves them. In a bad, wet year it can strip the leaves so badly that you lose up to half your crop (about 5 in every 10 plants' worth, 50%) — because every blotch kills a piece of the leaf that should be feeding the fingers underground. It creeps in quietly in cool, cloudy, rainy weather, one dirty spot at a time, and by the time the whole field looks rusty the damage to the harvest is already done. Catching it early, while only a few leaves are speckled, is what keeps the green on the plant and the weight in the rhizome.

The first thing you see: many small blotches scattered over the leaves — starting as tiny dirty-yellow specks, then turning reddish-brown. They show on both sides of the leaf, and on the underside they often look a dull, muddy yellow. There are usually lots of them at once, not just one or two.
