How to grow Turmeric

Turmeric is a leafy, ginger-like plant grown for the bright orange, aromatic rhizome (underground stem) hidden beneath it — the source of the yellow spice, the dye, and its own next-season seed. There is no true seed to buy: every crop is grown from pieces of last year's rhizome, called setts. It is a long, patient crop — 8 to 10 months of warm, damp weather and heavy feeding — and it lives or dies by drainage. Rhizomes left sitting in water rot in the ground, and that rot cannot be cured. Get the drainage, clean seed and feeding right, and you dig bright, firm fingers that boil, dry and polish into a spice that stores and sells.
