GIRSAL Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme
Credit / finance · Ghana · also called GIRSAL
A government-owned company that shares the risk on agricultural loans with banks, so that farmers and agribusinesses lenders would otherwise turn away can get credit. It does not lend to farmers directly.
What to know
| Administered by | Ghana Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending Ltd. (GIRSAL), wholly owned by the Government of Ghana through the Ministry of Finance |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Farmers do not apply to GIRSAL directly. The scheme is open to banks, specialised deposit-taking institutions, non-bank financial institutions and rural or community banks; a farmer benefits by taking a loan from one of these participating institutions. |
| What you get | Participating financial institutions get up to a 70% credit risk guarantee on agricultural loans, covering inputs, production, processing, marketing and export across agricultural value chains — which is what lets them say yes to a farmer they would otherwise refuse. |
| How to register | Apply for a loan at a bank, savings and loans company, or rural or community bank that participates in the scheme; GIRSAL itself is not approached directly. |
