Direct Seed Marketing
Input support · Ethiopia · also called DSM
An alternative seed marketing model, introduced by the government from 2011, in which seed producers sell to farmers through multiple channels — retailers, primary cooperatives, producer outlets and independent seed stores — instead of seed passing through the government's regional and woreda offices before reaching farmers.
What to know
| Administered by | Public and private seed producer enterprises and seed producer cooperatives, coordinated with the Ministry of Agriculture |
|---|---|
| Who qualifies | Smallholder farmers located in a woreda where Direct Seed Marketing has been rolled out; the 2013 expansion covered 33 selected woredas in Oromia, Amhara and SNNP regions. |
| What you get | Certified hybrid-maize seed — about 10 varieties were distributed through cooperatives, seed producer outlets and private stores in the pilot woredas. |
| How to register | A farmer in a DSM woreda buys seed directly from a cooperative, a seed producer's own outlet or a private seed store, rather than queuing through the conventional government-channel allocation. |
