How to grow Watermelon

Watermelon is a warm-season trailing vine, grown flat along the ground for its big, sweet, thirst-quenching fruit — a cousin of pumpkin, cucumber and melon. Three things make or break your crop: warm soil to wake the seed, bees to carry the heavy, sticky pollen from the male flowers to the female ones so fruit can set, and easing off the water as the fruit ripens so the flesh turns sweet instead of watery. The vines sprawl far, so give every plant plenty of room. You grow it straight from seed in warm, well-drained sandy ground — there is no nursery — and feed it only a light touch of nitrogen, because too much nitrogen grows leaf instead of fruit.
